Reading Suggestions

In the January 2024 issue of Kiplinger Personal Finance magazine, there were two articles that make for very good reading. You can probably find the magazine at your local library. The same – or very similar articles – are also available online. I have linked to them here.

Making Sense of Share Classes (p. 62) by Kim Clark. Any given mutual fund can have a variety of share classes. Some share classes indicate how & when the broker (salesperson) is compensated for the sale. Others are reserved for large investors, or employees investing through their employer retirement plan. Having a basic understanding of share classes can help you make the best decision when investing through a broker or when deciding whether to roll over funds from an employer plan into an IRA, for example.

Find Advice that’s Worth the Price (p. 49) by David Rodeck. My main complaint about this article is that he doesn’t even mention the word “fiduciary” until halfway through. Nonetheless, it does a good job of outlining fee structures, how to look for an advisor, etc.
